At Koenigsknecht Dentistry we screen our younger patients for signs of an airway issue that can lead to sleep disordered breathing. Patients who show the physical signs of an airway issue will also be screened for other symptoms like nightmares, snoring, focus issues and others. What we now know is that no child should snore, and that grinding teeth is a sign they are fighting a compromised airway.

How We Help – The HealthyStart® System
HealthyStart® System is a system of appliances (think: soft mouth guards) that work to open the airway by bringing the upper and lower jaws forward, allowing for maximum airflow, and aiding in the improvement of Sleep Disordered Breathing symptoms. Our system also has the ability to encourage mid-face growth and airway development. These mouth guards, called a Habit Corrector work to place the tongue and jaw in the optimal resting state to encourage breathing through the nose and an open airway. The Habit Corrector is typically worn only at night once the child adapts to wearing something in their mouth while they sleep. This typically takes one week to transition. The HealthyStart® System opens up the airway and improves airway width, while encouraging nasal breathing and ensuring that children are able to live happy and healthy lives.
The width of the airway worsens over time as the child develops if not treated, making it increasingly challenging for a child not only to breathe but also to live their day-to-day lives comfortably. We have placed children in the system as young as 3 and as old as 14. If you think your child could benefit from the HealthyStart System contact our office today for a free consultation.
